Write Brain TV & Highstyle Jiu Jitsu – an activist-run anti-imperialist gym in the greater Washington DC area – are teaming up for the 1st time for this special triple threat of African cinema centered around 3 traditional fighting styles that are crucial to the culture & history of the region. Both educational, artistic, & demonstrations of alternate fighting styles often not seen in the West – this crash course (literally) is both uplifting through the language of cinema by putting a spotlight on Africa’s history with martial arts long erased by the Western empire – while also exploring new ways for the resistance to arm themselves with the many dangers they face in the current climate.

Each film captures the heart, spirit, & history of these unique fighting styles from Donga (Ethiopian Stick Fighting), to Laamb (Senegalese Wrestling), & last but not least; Dambe (Nigerian Martial Arts). 25% of all proceeds will go to Good Trouble Cooperative; a revolutionary feminist activist collective. This is live & virtual with doors opening at 6 pm EST!
